Their combined capacity is 10,000 m3 per day.
The Cabo Verdean company ELECTRA (Empresa de Electricidade e Água, SARL) has awarded the consortium consisting of of ACCIONA Agua (60%) and SADE-CGTH (40%) the construction and start-up of two desalination plants on islands in the Republic of Cabo Verde. They will provide a service to more than 100,000 residents.
The plant on Isla de Sal, with a capacity of 5,000 m3, will cover the tourist complexes of the area, while the one on Isla de São Vicente – also with a capacity of 5,000 m3 – will serve the city of Mindelo, the second biggest in the Cabo Verde archipelago.Both islands are very arid and have serious water supply problems.Construction work on the plants will begin in the first trimester of 2015 and their entry into service is planned for early 2017, with an estimated timescale of 24 months.
The contract is worth 16 million euros, split between ACCIONA Agua (9,6 million) and its partner SADE-CGTH (6,4 million).
The objective of the Cabo Verdean company ELECTRA SARL is to produce and distribute electricity throughout the territory of Cape Verde, and also to produce and distribute potable water on the islands of São Vicente, Sal and the city of Praia – the capital of the Archipelago - with a coverage rate of 50%, and also out the collection, treatment and re-use of wastewater in Praia.
ACCIONA Agua has been present in the islands of Cabo Verde since 2001, when it started the construction of the Palmarejo desalination plant in the city of Praia. Its initial capacity of 5,000 m3/day has recently been increased by another 5,000 m3/day.
